Joints Flashcards
(19 cards)
Articulation
where two or more bones meet
What is the function of joints?
They hold the skeleton together and give the skeleton mobility.
2 classifications of joints
functional and structural
What is the functional classification based on?
amount of movement joint allows
What is the structural classification based on?
The material binding the bones together and the presence/absence of joint cavity.
3 functional classifications of joints and their meaning
Synarthroses - immovable joints
Amphiarthroses - - slightly movable joints
Diarthroses - freely movable joints
3 structural classifications of joints and their meanings
Fibrous joints -
Cartilaginous joints -
Synovial joints -
The two types of questions to ask yourself when looking at joints:
What is this functionally classified as? What is this structurally classified as?
Fibrous Joints:
joined together by dense fibrous connective tissues
- no joint cavity
- Synarthrotic (immovable)
- 3 types: Sutures, Syndesmoses, Gomphoses
3 types of fibrous joints
Sutures, Syndesmoses, Gomphoses
What are Sutures?
A type of fibrous joint.
- Interlocking joints
- immovable (synarthroses)
- found in skull
What are Syndesmoses?
A type of fibrous joint.
- joint where bones are connected by ligaments
- fiber length varies so movement varies
- interosseous membrane holding the radius and ulna
What are Gomophoses?
A type of fibrous joint.
- peg-in-sock joint
- periodontal ligament
- connects the tooth to the alveolar bone socket
Cartilaginous joints and the types
Bones connected by cartilage
- No joint cavity
- 2 types: Synchondrosis and Symphysis
How are cartilaginous joints functionally classified as?
Synarthroses or Amphiarthroses b/c they have little to no movement.
Synchondrosis joint
Type of cartilaginous joint.
- Bones joined together by Hyline cartilage.
- Synarthroses
- Example: Epiphyseal plate
Symphysis joint
Type of cartilaginous joint
- bones joined together by fibrocartilage.
- Amphiarthroses
- Example: Pubic symphysis
Synovial Joints
Bones separated by fluid filled cavity
- Diartroses
- Most common type of join in our body
