Consciousness Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is consciousness?
Awareness of internal and external experiences, including perception, thoughts, and emotions.
What is the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness?
Explaining why and how subjective experiences arise from physical brain processes (Chalmers, 1995).
What is blindsight?
Responding to visual stimuli without consciously seeing them, usually due to V1 damage.
What does blindsight suggest?
Perception can occur without conscious awareness.
What is the Global Workspace Theory?
Consciousness arises when information is widely broadcast across brain networks (Baars, 1988).
What is the Integrated Information Theory (IIT)?
Consciousness corresponds to the integration of information in the brain (Tononi, 2004).
What did Dehaene et al. (2006) show?
Conscious access involves widespread brain activation, unlike unconscious processing.
What is phenomenal vs access consciousness?
Phenomenal: subjective experience; Access: info available for reasoning or reporting.
