Conservation Flashcards
(20 cards)
What are three examples of fossil fuels?
Liquid petroleum gas, natural gases, coal
What are these fossil fuels used for?
They can generate electricity and produce gas, liquid petroleum gas and petrol.
What will happen is fossil fuels use keep rising?
Fossil fuels are used far more rapidly than they are formed. They may run out one day.
What are the limitations of solar energy?
Solar panels have to operate for eight years before recovering high setup costs.
What are the limitations of hydropower?
Construction of hydropower plants may damage river ecosystems in Europe.
What are the benefits of renewable energy?
Renewable energy sources are clean and will never be used up.
What are the benefits of nuclear energy?
A small amount of nuclear fuel can generate a large amount of electricity.
What are the limitations of nuclear energy?
An accidental leak of harmful radiation from a nuclear power plant can cause long-term damage to the environment.
Briefly explain the greenhouse effect.
Sunlight reaches the earth’s surface. Some of the heat from sunlight escapes into space. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap some of the heat from sunlight, keeping the lower atmosphere and the earth’s lower surface warm.
What is the importance of the greenhouse effect to the earth?
It helps to keep the earth warm.
If there is a large increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, how will the world’s temperature be affected?
More heat will be trapped in the lower atmosphere, causing the temperature of the earth’s surface to continue to rise.
What human activities have intensified the greenhouse effect?
- Factories emitting waste gases
- Cars emitting waste gases
- Deforestation
- Using electricity generated from fossil fuels.
What are extreme weather events caused by climate change?
- Heat waves
- Drought
- Typhoons
- Extreme rainfall
How can we help the environment by eating less meat?
IT lowers the demand for meat and thus reduce the sale of livestock farming.
How can we embrace low-carbon lifestyles?
We should avoid buying unnecessary products of overpackaged products and bring our own water bottle.
What is a food chain?
A food chain shows the feeding relationship among living things in a habitat.
Explain the relationship between living things and the environment.
Animals breathe out carbon dioxide, which is used by plants for photosynthesis. Plants produce oxygen during photosynthesis, which is breathed in by animals. Animal waste and remains become nutrients for plants, Plants are eaten by animals.
How do human activities affect the ecosystems?
Trees are cut down to make paper or furniture and wild animals are killed and sold illegally.
How does trawling affect marine life.
Fishing nets damage corals as the nets are dragged along the sea floor. Young fish that have not fully grown and caught, together with some rare living things.
How can we protect nature?
- Plant trees
- Reduce waste at source
- Clean up beaches
- Stop using plastic utensils
