Conservation of energy Flashcards
(9 cards)
Explain what is meant by conservation of energy
energy can be stored and transferred between stores but it can neither be created nor destroyed
List ways of preventing unwanted energy transfers
Thermal insulation : thermal radiation is reflected rather than absorbed.
Lubrication : A substance which reduces the effect of friction
How is the rate if cooling affected by the thickness and thermal conductivity of its walls?
The thicker the wall, the slower the rate of energy transfer
How can efficiency be increased?
Decreasing the amount of wasted energy means that a higher proportion of supplied energy is transferred to useful stores
Name the main energy stores available for us on earth
- fossil fuels
- nuclear power
- bio fuel
- hydro electricity
5.wind - 🌞
Describe Fossil fuels
slowly running out
release CO2 when burned - global warming
non renewable
Describe nuclear power
clean but nuclear waste is dangerous
difficult to dispose of
Describe bio fuel + wind + sun
they’re renewable
will never run out
do not provide as much energy as they depend on weather
Describe hydro electricity
renewable
generates power by using a dam
alter the natural flow of a river of other body of water
