conservation of energy Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transferred from one store to another.
What do the width of the arrows show in Sankey diagrams?
The amount of energy transferred in joules
Where is chemical energy found in?
Food
What kind of energy comes from moving objects?
Kinetic energy
What is elastic potential energy?
energy in stretched/squashed materials
What is gravitational energy?
energy in objects in high positions
What is useful energy?
The energy transferred which does its job
What is wasted energy?
The energy that is not usefully transferred
How would a Sankey diagram look for energy efficiency?
Wasted energy goes down, useful energy goes straight
what is the equation for efficiency?
efficiency = useful energy transferred / total energy supplied x 100
what are the 3 main ways heat is transferred and explain them?
conduction: the transfer of energy through solids
convection: the transfer of energy in liquids and gases
radiation: transfer of energy by infrared waves
How do you reduce the energy from heat?
insulation , trapping air and using shiny surfaces
What is the equation for kinetic energy?
1/2 x mass x velocity^2
What is the equation for gravitation potential energy?
GPE = mass x GFS x height
What is the energy transfers in a tennis ball which is throw into the air and bounces until it stops?
As the ball is thrown in the air kinetic energy occurs . As it reaches the maximum height and slows down gravitation potential energy occurs. The ball speeds up when making its way back down through kinetic energy and as it makes contact with the floor elastic potential energy occurs the same transfers continue to happen due to the rise and fall of the ball.
What are some non-renewable resources?
Coal, oil, natural gas, uranium, plutonium
what are advantages and disadvantages of non renewable sources?
advantages: reliable, easy to start and produces high energy
disadvantages: increases co2 levels, global warming and climate change
what are some renewable resources?
Solar, wind, hydroelectric , tidal, biomass
what are some advantages of renewable resources?
Advantages: wont run out, better for the environment, low maintenance
Disadvantages: Expensive and dependant on weather
What is biomass?
The burning of materials to heat up homes and electricity
