Light and the electromagnetic spectrum Flashcards
(8 cards)
What type of waves are electromagnetic waves?
Transverse waves
What are some examples of electromagnetic waves?
light, Radio waves, microwaves, anything on the Em spectrum
What is visible light?
frequencies of light our eyes can detect
Starting from the lowest colour of frequency what is the order of the colour spectrum?
low- Red, orange, yellow, green ,blue, indigo, violet -high
list the order of the electromagnetic spectrum starting from the lowest frequency with the longest wavelength
Radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays
What are examples of long wave lengths and explain what they are used for?
infrared: used for communication over short distances and is used in thermal imaging
microwaves: used for communication and the transfer of energy to heat up food
Radio waves: used for communication over long distances and transmits radio broadcasts
what are examples of short wave lengths and explain what they are used for
Ultra violet: used for the disinfection of water and is used for security (finding fingerprints)
x-rays: passes through many materials easily and is used in x-rays to gain images of inside the body
Gamma rays: used to kill cancer cells and to sterilise food and surgical equipment
What are some EM dangers?
-too much infrared radiation can destroy cells and burn the skin
-Ultraviolet can damage DNA cells and cause cancer
-X-rays and gamma rays penetrate the body and cause mutations in DNA
