Where does Evil come from?

A

Genesis 1, Ch3 - THE FALL - adam and eve disobey God, God punishes them - Litrealists - believe factually.
Catholics do not believe adam and eve were real - believe we have tendency to go agaibnst god.
ST AUGUSTINE & PRIVATION
1. - Evil helps us appreciate good
2.) Evil makes us better people
3.) God did not create Evil

Non Christian views on Evil

A

Moral Evil - caused by humans
Natural Evil - events that cause suffering e.g earthquake
JOHN MACKIE - ATHEIST
. we can easily appreciate good without evil being alongside it so why would God create Evil in the first place?
. Suffering doesnt make us better - just worse
.Why would god give free will?
DAVID HUME - ATHEIST - INCONSISTENT TRIAD
Evil proves god is neither omnipotent nor beneveolent. If there were a God there would not be Evil.

Catholic Ambivalence to Suffering

A

Catholics = mixed feelings (suffering) - suffering is not nice but it does not mean it is evil
. Suffering of Jesus - bought about good “Lamb of god…”
. Suffering of Job - terrible things happened to him - “it is not possible to understand why God does what he does.
.Suffering can be a sign of how commited you are to something. “Pick up cross and follow me” - Jesus
.Suffering is a blessing? “Blessed are those who mourn” - Jesus (Beatitudes)

Jesus - Moral Teaching

Gods law started with 10 commandments. Jesus - fulfilled law by saying following these rules was not enough…
“Yopu have heard that it was said “Love your neighbour and hate your enemy, but i tell you love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you” - Matt 5
“Do to others as you would want htem to do to you..”

Popular piety = prayers which are not part of formal rites of the Church - used by catholics to help them closer to God.
ROSARY - set of prayers (Hail Mary) - split into mysteries
- meditation.
SORROWFUL MYSTERIES
1 - agony in the garden
2 - scourging at pillar
3 - crowning of thorns
4 - carry cross
5 - crucifixion
- he;lps catholics find answers to evil and suffering.

Catholic Church have long history of pilgrimage
WHY?
- response to suffering
- strengthen faith
- pray for something
- seek physical, spiritual or emotional healing
Our lady appeared to Bernadette in 1858, 18 times

Water from spring can be collected and people drink or bathe in it …

Incarnation

A

Incarnate = “made flesh” - doctrine of incarnation teaches god became human through Jesus
FULLY GOD AND FULLY HUMAN - Jesus is one person with two natures
DIVINE WORD - relkationship between father and jesus is like a speaker and his or her words “Word was made flesh”
KENOSIS HYMN - even though he was divine, JEsus did not mind humbling himself
POPE ST JOHN PAUL II - Salvifici doloris - “Problem of suffering is not easy to understand. God loves us so much we must offer our suffering to God.
