Why was this a time of protest?

A

Changed from a mainly rural country to an industrialised country

Most ordinary people did not have the right to vote in elections, so they couldn’t get laws passed to help them

How did the authorities react?

A

Regarded protest as illegal and a threat to their position and their property.

Used the law and it’s harsh punishments to crush them and in extreme cases the army was sent to keep order

How and why did the nature of protest change later in the 19th century?

A

Became rather more democratic (only for men)

Ordinary people earned the right to vote, nature of protest changed and so too did the response of the authorities.

Women then became the main protesters
