What is context?
The cultural and situational factors surrounding a text.

Context of Production - What has influenced a text’s creation

Historical, social, cultural, and personal
What is the importance of the historical context?
Understanding the beliefs/values operating at the time helps us appreciate the representations constructed in the text.
What is the importance of the social context?
It considers prevailing attitudes/values and how they’re reflected in a text.
- How attitudes and values are endorsed/condemned through interactions and language choices.
What is the importance of the cultural context?
Encompasses the belief systems, traditions, practices, and customs passed down from generation to generation in a particular social group.

- To inform or offer interpretation
- To entertain or imagine
- To persuade or influence
- To analyse or study
What is audience?
Refers to anyone reading, viewing or listening to a text.
What is the importance of audience?
The beliefs, values and attitudes of the intended audience of a text will influence the generic, language, structural and stylistic choice made as well as the selection of content
How to identify an intended audience?
- Consider its social and cultural contexts,
- Its values and attitudes
- Its experiences and expectations regarding subject matter of text.
