What do OCPs reduce the risk of?
ovarian carcinoma, endometrial carcinoma, ectopic pregnancy

Copper and Levonorgestrel
How does the Copper IUD work?
Impairs sperm migration and viability, impairs implantation: works <10 years
How does the Levonorgestrel IUD work?
Progesterone: thickens cervical mucus impairing implantation and works for 3-8 years
What must be done prior to IUD?
urine pregnancy test
What should you do if a patient with an IUD is diagnosed with PID?
DO not remove the IUD
What is the first-line for emergency contraception?
Copper IUD
What pathogen is associated with IUD?
Actinomyces
If a patient has Actinomyces int he presence of infection what should you do?
Remove the IUD and treat with Penicillin or Doxycycline
What is the Contraceptive Implant: Nexplanon?
Progesterone-only contraceptive rod placed in the inner, upper arm that prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years
What is the most common side affect of Nexplanon?
Unpredictable bleeding
What is Tubal Iigation?
Surgical procedure where fallopian tubes are blocked, tied or cut
what is bilateral Salpingectomy?
Complete surgical removal of both fallopian tubes: recommended over tubal ligation and adds benefit of ovarian cancer prevention
What is a Vasectomy?
Surgical procedure where the vas deferens are cut of blocked
How does the Copper IUD work as emergency contraception?
Prevents fertilization via effect of Cu ions on sperm function: prevents endometrial receptivity
How many days is the Cu IUD effective as emergency contraception?
Up to 5 days
How do Ulipristal or Mifepristone work as emergency contraception?
Progesterone receptor modulators: delay/inhibit ovulation
