Control In Flowering Plants Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is the male part of the plant called?
The stamen
What is the female part of the plant called?
The Carpel
Anther
Contains pollen grains - these produces the male gametes
Filament
The stalk that supports the anther
Stigma
The end bit that the pollen grains attach to.
Style
The rod like section that supports the stigma
Ovary
Contains the female gametes inside the ovules.
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from an anther to a stigma, so that the male gametes can fertilise the female gametes in sexual reproduction.
What is cross-pollination?
A type of sexual reproduction where pollen is transferred from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another.
What does cross pollination rely on?
Insects & the wind
How are plants adapted for insect pollination?
Brightly coloured petals - attract insects
Scented flower and nectaries - attract insects
Big sticky pollen grains - grains stick to insects
Stigma is also sticky so any pollen picked up by insects on other plants stick to stigma.
How are plants adapted for wind pollination?
Small, dull petals
No nectaries or scents
A lot of small, light pollen grains that can be carried by wind
Long filaments, hanging outside the flower - lots gets blown away
Large feathery stigma to catch pollen as it’s carried by wind. (Hangs outside flower to)
