Flashcards in Control Systems: Gender, Sex and Infertility Deck (5)
What are Sperm and Egg cells?
they are haploid cells that contain only half the number of chromosomes of other body cells (diploid cells)
What happens during fertilisation?
the sperm and egg cell fuse together to form a diploid zygote cells, which then grows by mitosis into an adult organism
What is the Acrosome?
This is the cell at the sperms head, which contains enzymes to allow the sperm to penetrate the eggs cell membrane
Why do Sperm have lots of Mitochondria?
So that they can produce lots of energy for their journey, as they are the major site of respiration.
Why does the egg cell membrane change?
To stop the entry of other sperm.
