What does Hirschi (1969) believe?

A

Hirschi believes social order relies on socialisation and a strong value consensus, just like Durkheim
He noted that other structural theories only explained why a small minority of people are driven towards crime, and his theory is about what prevents most people being criminal or deviant

What are Hirschi’s 4 social bonds (1969)?

A

Belief - eg. shared political or religious beliefs
Commitment - eg. raising a family and supporting your work/colleagues
Involvement - eg. keeping busy with sports clubs and societies that link you to others
Attachment - eg. feeling you have a stake in your community, through shared experience like fetes or the local pub/social club/religious centre
