CITES what is it
- convention of international trade in endangered species of Wild fauna and flora
-aims to stop the buying and selling of them so that illegal hunting will stop
adapted by 180 countries
CITES good
- reducing ivory trade (tusks) and protecting african elephants
-lists most endangered species
CITES bad
- doesnt prevent deforestation
- species have to be under threat to make list = may be too late
-local communities arent intereseted in protecting animalsas its profitable and some animals are destructive
-worth 7-23bil so won stop
Montreal protocol what is it
-landmark multilateral environmental agreement that regulates production of Ozone depleting substances
Montreal protocol good
- supported over 8,600 projects (multilateral fund) worrth over 3.9bil to help developing nations reach goals
-proves that if help poor countries, they can help
UNCLOS what
- law of seas
- agreement defining rights and responsibilites of nations in using the oceans
-guidelines for managing marine resources and the rights of landlocked states
-exclusive economic zones EEZ 200miles = right to develop, exploit and amnage
-regulate global shipping flows
UNCLOS good
- landlocked countries given right to access for freedom
-illegal for ships to wash out oil tanks with sea water
-167 countries follow whaling commision guidleines helping them become less extinct
UNCLOS bad
- some countries still whale fish

- investigation into consequences of human caused ecosystem damage and what action required
Millendium ecosystem assesment good
- 1300 contributers from 95 countries creates holistic study
-helps determine the priorities
Millenium ecosystem assessment bad
change is possible but significatn changes are not currently underway
-not a lot being done about the issues highlighted

-international guideline regulating rivers

- success between colorado river = 80% to agriculture

- doesnt address independent aquifers but only those connected to rivers
-not enforceable
-UN creaed new rules which are more inclusive and widely used
RAMSAR convention
- 2200 wetland sites around world now protected by national govs and NGOs like WWF
RAMSAR convention good
- succesful in large parts of world as wetlands most biodiverse ecosystems
