Structural adjustment programmes (SAP’s)
- policies where in order for countries to qualify for financial adustment they must:
-open domestic markets
-reduce gov spending
-devalue currency to make exports cheaper
-remove restictions on capital
-reduce role of gov
-many countries sacrifice economic soverignity when accepting the conditions as TNCs take over and they rely more on trrade
highly indebted poor countries initiative
- introduced by IMF and WB to lower national debt by partally writing them off in return for SAPs
