Coordinating Systems and Food Chain Flashcards

(11 cards)

1
Q

What are two coordinating systems in our bodies? How do they coordinate?

A

The nervous and endocrine system. The nervous system controls quick, involuntary movements, or reflexes. The endocrine system controls the slow, internal actions of the body.

Q

What are the six parts of a neuron, and what are their functions?

A

Cell Body: To protect the nucleus. Nucleus: To control the neuron. Axon: To send messages down to the axon tips. Myelin: To insulate the axon. Axon Tips: To send messages to the next neuron. Dendrites: To receive messages from previous neurons.

Q

What are the three major sections of the ear, and the other major parts of the ear?

A

The three sections are the Outer, Middle, and Inner Ear. The major parts are the ear, ear canal, eardrum, cochlea, stirrup, Auditory Nerve, Semicircular Canals, and Eustachian Tube.

Q

What are the functions of tears? Cornea? Lens? Optic Nerve? Retina (Rods and Cones)? Cochlea? Auditory Nerve? Eustachian Tube?

A

Tears: To cleanse the eye. Cochlea: To help focus the eye, and let light into the eye. Lens: To focus light into the eye. Optic Nerve: To send images from the eyes to the brain. Retina: To let light into the eyes. Rods and Cones: To produce the image UPSIDE-DOWN. Rods notice black and white, Cones, colors. Cochlea: To receive vibrations from within the ear, and send sensory neurons to the brain. Auditory Nerve: To send sensory neurons to the brain from cochlea. Eustachian Tube: Equalize pressure between the outer and inner ear.

Q

What happens when the amount of light outside changes? Why does it happen? How is this a reflex?

A

The retina enlarges or shrinks. To let more light or less light into the eye. This is a reflex because it is involuntary.

Q

Why is standing more tiring than walking?

A

Because when standing still, the blood has a hard time going down to the feet and back up again. When walking, the distance decreases, making it easier for blood to return to the heart.
