coordination of response Flashcards
(18 cards)
what’re stimuli detected by?
receptor cells
where are receptor cells located
in sense organs like the nose or eyes
inside the body like in pressure receptors in blood vessels
receptor cells send signals via either the nervous or hormonal system to the bodys COORDINATION centres in the brain or spinal chord
signals are then sent onto parts of the body which respond, whatre these parts of the body called?
effectors
can be either muscles or glands!
give an example of the response of effectors
muscle: an arm muscle would react to a hot surface by contracting to move the arm away
gland:pancreas responds to high blood glucose by secreting insulin
what does the cns consist of?
brain and spinal chord
what does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
all the nerves in the body
the nervous system allows detection of stimuli in our surroundings, what does it coordinate after stimuli is detected?
allows coordination of the bodys response to the stimuli
how is information from stimuli sent
information is sent through the nervous system in the form of electrical impulses that pass along neurones
what is a nerve
a bundle of neurones
sensory neurones
stimulus-receptor-sensory neurone-cns-motor neurone-effector
transmit nerve impulses from receptors to central nervous system
relay neurones
transmit nerve impulses across cns, from sensory neurones to motor neurones
cns is like a central coordinating centre for the impulses that come in from and are sent out to any part of the body
motor neurones
impulses from cns to effectors
endocrine system
hormones are chemical messengers PRODUCED by endocrine glands and carried by the blood
hormone function
transmit information from one organism to another and bring about change by altering the activity of one or more specific target organs
hormones are slower in action than nerve impulses- what kind of functions are they therefore used to control
functions that dont need instant responses
what can endocrine glands be stimulated by
action of another hormone or by the arrival of a nerve impulse
where do endocrine glands secrete hormones?
directly into the blood
sequence of events
