Coordination: The Nervous System, The Special Senses, and Behavior Flashcards

(55 cards)

1
Q

Describe the functions of the nervous system.

A

The nervous system, in general, sends signals to your brain based on seeing, smelling, feeling, etc. something. Your brain then sends signals to your body to trigger a reaction.

Q

How is the structure if a neuron perfect for its function of transmitting messages?

A

The dendrites carry the impulses to the cell body and nucleus. It then travels through the axon to the axon tips to other cells. (long axon).

16
Q

How does a signal go across a synapse?

A

The nerve impulse crosses the gap. It is carries by chemicals released from the axon tips.

24
Q

Describe the function of the Sympathetic Nervous System.

A

It sends signals to the brain via sensory nerves when you see something scary.

25
Name some physiological changes that occur in your body when you activate the sympathetic nervous system.
You get goosebumps, your heart beats faster, you breathe more rapidly, and glycogen is broken down into glucose.
26
What is a reflex?
an automatic, quick response that happens without consciousness.
27
What is the function of most reflexes?
protection
28
What three things in your body protect your brain?
three layers of connective tissue. (fluid & membranes)
29
What three things in your body protect our spinal chord?
fluid, membranes, vertebrae
30
What can you do when biking, skateboarding, or rollerblading, to protect your brain?
wear a helmet.
31
How can you reduce the risk of a spinal cord injury when riding in a car?
wear a seatbelt.
32
How do the eyes adjust when we go from indoors to bright sunlight?
Your pupil becomes smaller.
33
How do the eyes adjust when we enter a dark theater?
Your pupil becomes larger.
34
How does the cornea keep moist?
The cornea is kept moist when you blink. The tears keep it moist.
35
What is the main function of the cornea?
protects eye from germs; allows light into eye
36
What is the main function of iris?
regulates how much light enters your eye (size of pupil)
37
What is the main function of the pupil?
light enters through the pupil
38
What is the function of the lens?
focuses light
39
What is the function of the retina?
rods - lets you see black, white, and gray | cones - lets you see color
40
What is the function of the optic nerve?
transmits impulses to the brain
41
Is the muscle which controls your lens relaxed or contracted for close work?
contracted
42
Is the lens thin or fat at this time?
fat
43
Are ligaments tense or slack?
slack
44
Function of cochlea
the cochlea has receptor cells which respond to sound.
45
Function of auditory nerve
the auditory nerve carries nerve impulses from sounds from your cochlea and your brain.
46
Function of semi-circular canals
your semi-circular canals control your sense of balance.
47
Function of Eustachian tubes
it connects your middle ear to your nose
48
Function of eardrum
your eardrum vibrates when sound strikes it
49
Function of wax
Wax keeps your ear canals moist.
50
What is the largest sensory organ? What sense is it for?
It is the skin and it is for your sense of touch. (pain, pressure, temperature)
51
Example of Diffusion
neurotransmitter leaving axon tips or entering dendrites.
52
Example of Homeostasis
