Coordination: The Nervous System, The Special Senses, and Behavior Flashcards
(55 cards)
Describe the functions of the nervous system.
The nervous system, in general, sends signals to your brain based on seeing, smelling, feeling, etc. something. Your brain then sends signals to your body to trigger a reaction.
Define stimulus.
any change in the environment.
Define response.
the reaction to a stimulus
Function of cell body
holds nucleus
Function of nucleus
the “brain” of your neuron; control center
Function of myelin
insulates axon
Function of axon
carries impulses from cell body
Function of axon tips
transfers impulses to other cells. releases chemicals to transmit impulses across the synapse.
Function of dendrites
carries impulses to cell body. receives stimuli from other neurons.
How is the structure if a neuron perfect for its function of transmitting messages?
The dendrites carry the impulses to the cell body and nucleus. It then travels through the axon to the axon tips to other cells. (long axon).
Function of Sensory Neuron
takes in messages to your brain and spinal chord
Function of Connecting Neuron
in brain and spinal chord and connects to other neurons.
Function of Motor Neuron
takes messages from brain and spinal chord to muscles.
In order, name the parts of a neuron through which a signal travels.
dendrites, cell body, axon, axon tips
What is a synapse?
The space where a neuron transfers an impulse to a different structure.
How does a signal go across a synapse?
The nerve impulse crosses the gap. It is carries by chemicals released from the axon tips.
What is a neurotransmitter?
A neurotransmitter is the chemical that carries an impulse across.
Two divisions of the Peripheral System
a) motor and sensory nerves
b) autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic)
Two divisions of Central System
a) brain
b) spinal chord
Function of cerebrum
controls functions such as speech, thought, movement, and senses.
Function of cerebellum
coordinates your muscles and maintains balance.
Function of spinal chord.
links your brain and peripheral nervous system
Function of brain stem.
in charge of involuntary actions.
Describe the function of the Sympathetic Nervous System.
It sends signals to the brain via sensory nerves when you see something scary.
