Excretory System and Metabolism Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is the function of your kidney?
to separate waste from blood (these wastes make up urine)
What is the function of your ureters?
takes urine from kidney to bladder.
What is the function of your bladder?
stores urine until excreted
What is the function of your urethra (female)?
takes urine from bladder out of body
What is the function of your urethra (male)?
takes urine from bladder out of body; takes sperm out of body, but not at the same time as urine.
Where does carbon dioxide leave the body?
exhale from the lungs
Where does water leave the body?
sweat, exhale, urine, feces
Where does urea leave the body?
kidney and sweat
Where does salt leave the body?
sweat and urine
Where do feces (undigested food) leave the body?
anus
The liver breaks down old red blood cells and saves the iron to make new hemoglobin. Why do you think this is useful?
You won’t have to keep eating more and more iron.
Define metabolism.
Metabolism is your body’s chemical reactions
Which gives you more ATP’s, burning glucose with or without oxygen?
Burning glucose with oxygen gives you more ATP’s.
What chemical causes muscles to tire?
Lactic acid causes muscles to tire
Under what conditions is lactic acid produced?
Anaerobic exercise causes this chemical to be produced.
If you are still panting after you stop exercising, what does this tell you?
This means you did anaerobic and aerobic exercise.
In what ways would a high protein diet be stressful to your body?
The liver has to separate extra amino acids into amino groups and acid groups. You can burn the acid group. The liver then has to put two amino groups together to make less toxic urea. The kidney has to get rid of extra urea.
