COPD Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are the signs and symptoms of COPD?
SOBOE, chronic cough, fatigue, sputum production, increased chest infection risk, tripod positioning, clammy skin, dizziness
SOBOE stands for Shortness Of Breath On Exertion.
What are some causes of COPD?
Indoor and outdoor plants, smoking, genetics, dust and chemicals
These factors can contribute to the development and exacerbation of COPD.
What is the pathophysiology of COPD?
Irritant causes inflammatory response, mucous removal impaired, chronic inflammation releases damaging substances, cytokines released, leaking capillaries of protein-rich fluid, increased mucous production, radial traction collapses small airways trapping air and WOB, bronchoconstriction, decreased elasticity of airways, small alveoli become one large alveoli, decreased surface area impairs gas exchange, expiration is difficult due to loss of recoil.
WOB stands for Work Of Breathing.
What are some nursing interventions for COPD?
Administer O2 as prescribed, position upright, encourage fluids, encourage pursed lip breathing
Each intervention aims to optimize lung function and manage symptoms.
