Cornell Notes 14 Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is homeostasis
Homeostasis: the maintenance of stable internal conditions despite changes in the outside environment
how does your body regulate your body temp.
If your body temperature begins to get too low- your nervous system will send signals to other body systems to help raise it back up:
- Your skin (integumentary system) might develop goosebumps
- Your muscles may shiver
- You may start moving large muscle groups (like bouncing or rubbing your arms to keep warm).
how does your body help keep your balance
Structures in your inner ear sense the position of your head
- This information gets sent to your brain
- If the brain senses that you are losing your balance, it will send a message to your muscles to move in a way to keep you steady
Describe what happens in the body when the body needs more energy
When your cells need more energy, hormones will signal to the nervous system to make you feel hungry
When you have consumed enough glucose to replenish your cells, other hormones will signal to your nervous system to make you feel full
Why does your body need water?
All chemical reactions take place in the watery environment of your cells
How do different body system help make sure you get water when you need it?
if your body needs water, your nervous system will cause you to feel thirsty
Define stress
Stress: the reaction of a person’s body to potentially threatening, challenging or disturbing events
Does everyone experience stress the same way?
Each person experiences stress differently
Why is ongoing stress problematic?
Ongoing stress: can disturb homeostasis and weaken the body’s ability to fight disease
Can also cause a wide array of health issues
Why can germs be problematic?
Germs (viruses and bacteria): cause disease can disrupt homeostasis and make you sick
Explain how the immune system fights germs/ diseases.
make you sick
The immune system includes specialized cells (like white blood cells) that attack and destroy germs
Fighting infections this way can sometimes cause your body temp. to increase and your energy levels decrease
