What is emotional intelligence?
“The ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions, to discern among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action”
What are reflecting feelings?
Reflecting feelings says that you understand clients emotions
What are 3 outcomes of reflecting feelings?
-Deeper client disclosure, greater awareness of feelings, & helps client report their emotions

Step 1. Choose a sentence stem

-Focusing

What does a focusing summary do?
-Brings attention to the major issues or themes
-Reminds client of the goals
What is the purpose of a signal summary?
Suggests to the client that helper is ready to move on to new material
What is the purpose of a thematic Summary?
Identifies pattern of content or feelings or meanings that helper has noticed
What is the purpose of a planning summary?
Review progress, future directions and agreements made, denoting the end of the session
What is feedback?
–Providing information and your honest reaction to the client
What is confrontation?
-Pointing out inconsistencies and blind spots in the client’s story
What has high confrontation and high support?
Helping
What has low confrontation and high support?
Befriending
What has low support and low confrontation?
Ignoring

When is it appropriate to use feedback?
-To indicate how the client’s behavior affects the helper or other people
-To evaluate a client’s progress toward their goals
-To supply a client with information based on the helper’s observation.
