correlations Flashcards
(7 cards)
correlation
a mathematical technique in which a researcher investigates an association between 2 variables called co-variables. No manipulation of variables
co-variables
variables investigated within a correlation. not referred to as IV and DV as a correlation investigates an association between them rather than a cause and effect relationship
positive correlation
as one co-variable increases so does the other.
negative correlation
as one co-variable increases the other decreases
zero correlation
when there is no relationship between the co variables
strength of correlation
correlations are useful preliminary tool for research. They provide a precise and quantifiable measure of how 2 variables are related. this may suggest ideas for future research as they are often used as a starting point to assess possible patterns between variables before researchers commit to a study. they are quick and economical to carry out. less time consuming as variables don’t need to be manipulated and secondary data can be used
limitation of correlations
lack of experimental manipulation and control. only tell us how variates are related not why. can’t demonstrate cause and effect so we don’t know which variable is causing the other to change. may be an intervening variable that goes untested that may be causing the relationship
