Corticospinal Tract Flashcards
(12 cards)
Is corticospinal tract Sensory or motor?
Motor
Anterior and Lateral
Where does the pathway begin?
primary motor cortex (area 4) and the supplemental and premotor cortices (area 6)
Where does the Corticospinal tract decussate?
75 - 90% decussate in the medulla at the prymaids - These are the fibres that will innovate the limbs
The Anterior fibres Decussate at the spinal cord at point of exit
What is another name for the corticospinal tract?
Pyramidal tract
Where does the upper motor neuron of the corticospinal tract synapse?
Lower motor neurons of Anterior Horn of the grey matter in the spinal cord
What is the function of the Anterior Corticospinal Tract?
responsible for the conscious control of the proximal musculature
What is the function of the Lateral Corticospinal Tract?
responsible for the conscious control of the distal musculature
fine control of movements of the hand
Where does the lower motor neuron arise for the corticospinal tract?
Anterior horn
Where does the lower motor neuron go to?
The skeletal muscles
What is the corticobulbar tract responsible for?
Conscious control of the head and neck
What is the site of decussation for the corticobulbar tract?
Brain stem
Where is the destination for the corticobulbar tract?
Lower motor neurons of the cranial nerve nuclei in the brain stem
