Dorsal Column Flashcards
(12 cards)
Where does the Dorsal Column pathway decussate?
Medial Lemniscus in the medulla
When does the 3 order neurons start and finish?
- Dorsal root ganglia –> caudal medulla
- Nucleus Gracilsis/ Cunnateous –> Thalamus
- Contralateral Ventral Posterolateral (VPL) nucleus of the thalamus –> Postcentral gyrus and Lateral parietal cortex

What receptors are for touch sensory?
Pacinian corpuscles - Mechanoreceptor
Meissner corpuscles - Mechanoreceptor
Ruffini endings & Merkel endings
Is this a conscious or unconscious pathway?
Conscious because its end point is the cerebral cortex
Is the Dorsal Column pathway sensory or motor?
Ascending Sensory Pathway
What is the name of the two nuclei for the Dorsal Colum?
Cuneatus nucleus & Gracile nucleus
What are the two parts of the Dorsal Column pathway?
Fasciculus Gracilis - Foot
Fasciculus Cuneatus - Hand
What region of the spine does the lower neuron enter?
T6 - S5
What type of sensory information does it collect?
- Proprioception - where the body is
- Vibration
- Pressure
- Fine touch
- Two-point discrimination
What region of the spine does the upper neuron enter?
C1 - T5
What sort of fibres do you get in the Dorsal column pathway?
A-Beta fibre
Which fibres run more medially in the spinal cord?
Gracilsis fasciculus
