–steroids
–are a group of chemicals secreted by the adrenal cortex and are referred to as adrenal cortical hormones

Mode of Action of Corticosteroids

A

–steroids work by reducing inflammation, swelling, and mucus production in the airways. As a result, the airways are less inflamed and less likely to react to triggers

A

–maintenance, control therapy of chronic persistent asthma
-helps prevent the symptoms of asthma
-COPD
-Intranasal aerosol agent: seasonal and perennial allergic and nonallergic rhinitis

A

–Early use in asthma:
reduces morbidity and airway hyperresponsiveness
spacer is recommended
–Acute Severe Asthma:
not beneficial, for controlling rather than relieving can help improve lung function
–Inhaled Corticosteroids
low dose preferred for decreased side effects
