Network
Collection of computers and devices connected together often wirelessly via communication devices and transmission media. Allows computers to share resources
ARPANET
Functional in 1969 linking scientific and academic researchers across the United States.
Bandwidth
Amount of data that travels over a network
E-Commerce
Electronic Commerce, business transaction that occurs over an electronic network such as the Internet
Supercomputer
Fastest most powerful computer. Capable of processing many trillions of instructions in a single second
Terminal
Computer with limited processing power that enables users to send data and receive information from a server or host computer
Embedded computer
Special purpose computer that functions as a component in a larger product. Ex. Airbags in a car or security systems in a home
Under voltage
Occurs when electric supply or voltage drops
Over voltage or power surge
Occurs when incoming electrical supply or voltage increases more than five percent
Spyware
Program placed on a computer or mobile device with out the users knowledge that secretly collects info about the user and send that info to an outside source
Adware
Program that displays an online advertisement in a banner or pop up window on web pages, emails or other internet services
Phishing
Scam in which a perpetrator sends an official looking email message that attempts to obtain personal or financial info
Hacker
Someone who accesses a computer or network illegally
Cracker
Someone who accesses a computer or network illegally but has the intent of destroying data
Virus
Potentially damaging program that affects a computer or mobile device by altering the way the device works without the users permission
Worm
Program that copy’s it’s self repeatedly
Trojan horse
Program that looks legitimate. Does not replicate itself to other devices
Rootkit
Program hides in a computer or mobile device and allows someone from a remote location to take full control of computer
Spyware
Placed on a computer and secretly collects info about the user and communicates that info to an outside source
Botnet
Or zombie army, group of compromised computers connected to a network such as the Internet used to attack other networks for nefarious purposes
Cookie
Small text file that a web server store on your computer that typically contains data about you ex. User name, postal code, etc
Malware
Malicious software, acts with out a users knowledge and deliberately alters the computer and mobile devices operations
