Covalent bonding Flashcards
(11 cards)
How are covalent bonds formed?
When non-metals share pairs of electrons
What are covalent bonds like?
Strong
What do many covalent compounds consist of?
Small, simple molecules like oxygen, chlorine or water
What are covalent compounds usually?
Gases or liquids
What are the boiling/melting points in covalent compounds?
Low
What are between the molecules in small covalent molecules?
Weak intermolecular forces
What breaks when small covalent molecules are heated?
Intermolecular forces break not the covalent bonds
Do simple covalent molecules conduct electricity? Why?
No because the molecules do not have an overall charge
What are polymers?
Very large molecules that are held together by strong covalent bonds
What do some covalently bonded substances have? Examples?
Giant structures e.g. silicon dioxide, diamond and graphite
What are the melting/boiling points like in giant covalent structures?
Very high melting and boiling points
