Cover Test Flashcards
(20 cards)
What type of test is the cover test?
An objective dissociative test
What is the cover test used for?
To define the presence and type of deviation
Does the patient wear glasses during a cover test?
Yes, they should be in an emmetropic state for each distance
Which type of deviation can be seen in a cover/uncover test?
Manifest deviations (sometimes latent) and quality of fixation
Which type of deviation can be seen in an alternate cover test?
Latent deviations and very small manifest deviations
What does the alternate cover do?
Completely dissociate the eyes
What must you watch for in latent deviations after you have finished dissociating?
Recovery
What distances is the cover test performed at?
1/3m and 6m
Why do the cover test to a light and to a target at 1/3m?
Deviation may change with accommodation
What is accommodation?
Focussing on something near
How does a patient with a manifest deviation see single?
Suppression
What is the medical name for double vision?
Diplopia
Why perform the cover test at different fixation differences?
Deviation may change, allows full investigation to classify the deviation
What is nystagmus?
Wobbly, pendulum or jerky eye movements
What is DVD?
Dissociated vertical deviation
Why are corneal reflections useful?
Help to assess the position of the eye
What is a pseudo strabismus?
Patient looks like they have a deviated eye, but have no deviation on a cover test
What causes a pseudo strabismus?
Wide epicanthic folds
What are manifest deviations called?
Tropia
What are latent deviations called?
Phobia
