What is positionalitiy and its factors?
Different people will perceive places in different ways
Gender
Age
Race
Ethnicity
Religion
Socio-economic status
Politics
What is an experienced place?
A place that a person has spent time in that has shaped their sense of that place
What is a media place?
A place where someone has never been, but their sense of place is shaped by the media eg) films, tv, books, poems.
What are exogenous factors?
Exogenous factors are defined as the relationships of one place with other places and the external factors which affect this
e.g. a town may be the source of day-trippers for a tourist destination.
What are endogenous factors?
These refer to the local demographic characteristics and the physical geography of a place. They have originated internally These help to shape its unique character.
What is lived experience?
A person’s sense of place that has been developed through their first-hand experiences of the place in spending time there.
What is an outsider?
Increasingly seeing people treated as outsiders including: travellers, protestors
Not born there, immigrant, or parents and grandparents were immigrants
Status: temporary visitor, foreign passport, May not be able to work/claim benefits
Not fluent in language
Frequently misunderstands social interactions
Homesick, alienated, feels ‘out’ of place
What is an insider?
Feel a sense of belonging to the place
Born there / parents were born there
Status: permanent resident, holds passport, can work, vote claim benefits eg) free housing
Understands unspoken rules of society
Conforms to local norms
Safe, secure , happy - feels at home or ‘in place’ there
What are ‘near’ and ‘far’ places?
Could refer to geographical distance between places eg) France geographically close, New Zealand geographically far away.
Equally, could describe the emotional connection with a particular place and how comfortable a person feels within that place eg) near place would hopefully feel comfortable and safe however a far place may feel unfamiliar even if not geographically far
What is belonging and it’sfactors?
To belong, means to be part of a community
The extent to which you may feel a sense of belonging to a place can be influenced by a number of factors:
Age
Gender
Sexuality
Socio-economic status
Religion
Level of education
Rave and ethnicity
What is identity?
Our sense of a place, the meaning we give a location, can be so strong it features as a central part of our identity
Changes in nature of places may affect people and identity eg) football fans whose confidence takes a hit due to them national team losing World Cup
What scales can identity be evident at?
Localism an affection for or emotional ownership of a particular place
Regionalism: consciousness of, and loyalty to, a distinct region within a population that shares similarities
Nationalsim: loyalty and devotion to a nation, which creates a sense of national consciousness
What is location and locale?
Location - where a place is on a map, longitude and latitude
Locale - the place where something happens or is set, or that has particular events associated with it
May not be tied to a physical location so a vehicle may be a locale that structures interactions between people
What is sense of place?
The subjective and emotional attachment to a place, its meaning.
People develop sense of place through experience and knowledge of a particular area.
