CPS Elements Flashcards
(20 cards)
Element
simplest kind of matter that can’t he broken down any simpler and still has the properties of that element, and has the same kind of atom
Compounds
substances that can be broken down only by chemical methods, and when broken down, they have completely different properties than the original compound
Mixtures
substances that have variable composition
Homogeneous Mixture
having no parts you can see/solution
Heterogeneous Mixture
having visibly distinguishable parts
Solution
a homogeneous mixture of particle so small that they cannot be seen with a microscope and will NEVER SETTLE to the bottom
Solute
a substance that is dissolved
Solvent
a substance that does the dissolving
Colloid
a type of mixture with particles that are larger than those in solutions but NOT heavy enough to settle out
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which physical particles settle
Physical Properties
a property that can be observed and measured without changing the material’s composition
Chemical Properties
a property that can only be observed by changing the composition of a material
Conservation of Mass
During any chemical reaction, the mass of the products is always equal to the mass of the reactants
Acid
A solution that has an excess of H+ ions and the more H+ ions, the more acidic the solution.
Base/Alkali
a solution that has an excess of OH- ions, substances that are basic can accept hydrogen ions and does not react with metals
pH
a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is
pH 0
Highly acidic
pH 7
neutral
pH 14
highly basic
Neutralization
a reaction between an acid and a base
