What is the function of the Olfactory n. (CN1)?
Olfaction
What is the function of the Optic n. (CN2)?
Vision
What foramen does the Olfactory n. (CN1) pass through?
Cribiform plate
What foramen does the Optic n. (CN2) pass through?
Optic canal
What is the function of the Oculomotor n. (CN3)
- Acts on extrinsic ocular muscles, pupil & lens.
- Innervates superior, medial, inferior recti, inferior oblique muscles and levator palpebrae superioris.
What is the parasympathetic function of the Oculomotor n. (CN3)?
- Innvervation to sphincter pupillae and ciliary muscles
- causes pupil constriction and lens accomodation
What foramen does the Oculomotor n. (CN3) pass through?
Superior orbital fissure
What is the function of the Trochlear n. (CN4)?
superior oblique muscles (of eye)
What foramen does the Trochlear n. (CN4) pass through?
Superior orbital fissure
What is the only cranial n. to emerge form the dorsal aspect of the brain?./
Trochlear n.
What is the three branches of the Trigeminal n. (CN5)?
V1: ophtalmic branch
V2: maxillary branch
V3: mandibular branch
What foramen does the trigeminal n. (CN5) pass through?
V1: superior orbital fissure
V2: Foramen rotundum
V3: Foramen ovale
What is the function of the Trigeminal n. (CN5)?
V1: sensory of top half face and cornea (corneal reflex)
V2: sensory from face overlying maxilla, including upper teeth and palate
V3: Sensory from face overlying mandible, including lower teeth and external ear. Motor for mastication
What is the function of the Abducens n. (CN6)?
Lateral rectus muscle (of eye)
What foramen does the Abducens n. (CN6) pass through?
Superior orbital fissure
What is the function of the facial n. (CN7)?
- motor of facial expression
- Sensory (taste) from anterior 2/3 of tongue and palate
What is the parasympathetic function of the facial n. (CN7)?
Innervation to the salivary glands
What foramen does the facial n. (CN7) go through?
Internal acoustic meatus
What is the function of the Vestibulocochlear n. (CN8)?
Hearing, equilibrium.
Divides into vestibular and cochlear nn.
What foramen does the vestibulocochlear n. (CN8) pass through?
Internal acoustic meatus
What is the function of the glossopharyngeal n. (CN9)?
- sensory (taste) from posterior 1/3 of tongue
- Sensory to posterior pharynx (gag reflex) and carotid body
What is the parasympathetic function of the glossopharyngeal n. (CN9)?
Innervation to parotid gland
What foramen does the glossopharyngeal n. (CN9) pass through?
Jugular foramen
What is the function of the vagus n. (CN10)?
- motor to muscles of larynx and superior esophagus
- sensory (visceral; unconscious sensations) from structures in throrax and abdomen.
