cratchits Flashcards
(4 cards)
how is bob cratchit an emblem of the neglected poor
his short dialogue suggest how the poor were silenced and oppressed “if quite convenient sir”
referenced at the “clerk” his lack of name suggests how the poor were stripped of their identities
what is the use of tiny tims death
its an angelic presentation of innocent children making the reader see the injust punishments the poor faces at the hands of the upper class
“my little little child” cried bob’ - repition of little creates fragility
“dressed out poorly in a twice turned gown but brave in ribbons”
- alliteration on twice turned emphasises their poverty
- “gown” suggests she is trying to make the best out of what shes got
- “ribbions” teh festivity highlights the foundations of the cratchits and however even though they may be impoverished they still celebrate what they have
what is the ultimate sign of bob cratchit’s gratitude
” i give you mr scrooge the founder of the feast!”
“founder” connotes creator and suggests that bob sees scrooge as almost like a godly figure that provides him what he thinks of as luxuries
this highlights how the poor are blindly grateful to those who exploit them
dickens is trying to expose that it is the rich that are promoting poverty by preserving their own wealth
