Problem: Germans manning their machine guns, and scaling the steep hill.
● Currie developed the “Creeping Barrage”
○ The guns fired in a fixed positions and the base of the gun will move (often
on tracks) and not the barrel.
○ They will blanket the Vimy in fire, forcing the Germans to take refuge in
their fortifications.
○ As the barrage advances, Canadian infantry would follow just behind the
explosions.
○ This eliminated the delay and didn’t give the Germans an opportunity to
regain their footing and gave Canadians enough time to climb the ridge.
