crime + deviance: green crime Flashcards
(16 cards)
what is green crime?
crime against the environment
how does an increase in green crime link to globalisation?
the increased interconnectedness of society means problems caused in one locality/country can have worldwide effects
what does Beck say about human-made global risks?
the massive increase in productivity + technology has created new ‘manufactured’ risks which involve harm to the environment
what’s an example of human-made risks?
deforestation, burning fossil fuels which can lead to risks like global warming and climate change
what is traditional criminology?
study patterns + causes of law breaking so believes no laws have been broken with green crime
what is green criminology?
look at the harm something causes to the physical environment and/or humans + animals even if no laws have been broken
how is green criminology a form of transgressive criminology?
oversteps boundaries of traditional criminology to include new issues
what is meant by anthropocentric view of environmental crime?
human centred, believe humans have the right to dominate nature for their own ends + put economic growth before the environment
according to White, who applies an anthropocentic view?
nation states + TNC’s
what is meant be an ecocentric view according to White?
sees humans and their environment as interdependent so the environmental harm hurts humans also
what is primary green crimes?
crimes that result directly from the destruction and degradation of the earth’s resources
examples of primary green crimes?
-crimes of air pollution
-crimes of deforestation
-crimes of species decline + animal rights
-crimes of water pollution
what is secondary green crimes?
due to breaking rules aimed at preventing or protecting the environment from environmental disaster
example of secondary green crime?
high cost of safe disposal of chemical + nuclear weapons has led some organisations to dispose of dangerous material illegals
like in Italy, eco-mafia profit from illegal dumping
strength of green criminology?
recognises the growing importance of environmental issues + the need to address the harms and risks of environmental damage
weakness of green criminology?
by focusing on much broader concept of harms rather than legally defined crimes, it’s hard to fine the boundaries of its field of study clearly
