Etic and emic cross cultural research
Phonetic: scholars using clearly defined criteria, objectively and scientifically record sounds and then study them in rigorous ways
Phonemics: does not concentrate upon observable phenomena (sound patterns), but upon categories which exist within the mind of the informant and cannot be empirically verified
Etic vs emic
Etic(scientific): rigorous, hinders ability to explain, can be verified by others, only q’s that can be measured, can be taught
Emic(humanistic): unverifiable, views cultures on their own terms, assumes how other minds think, uses all available evidence
