one period of time, rather than longitudinal
Gather participants at a range of ages with the behaviour of interest, e.g., attachment disorder

several - questionnaire, interviews, e.g., strange situation, measuring their temperament, etc.

- quicker than longitudinal
- can get triangulation of data
- rich, detailed data.

- could have participant variables
- don’t get as much depth about each participant as longitudinal.
