Cryotherapy Flashcards
What is cryotherapy?
therapeutic use of cold to reduce pain, swelling, inflammation and reduce spasticity
What is specific heat in relation to cryotherapy?
It’s the energy required to raise a material’s temperature, affecting how cold agents transfer heat
What are the hemodynamic effects of cold?
vasoconstriction and cold- induced vasodilation due to sympathetic inhibition
How does cryotherapy impact metabolism?
It decreases metabolic rate
What are the neuromuscular effects of cold?
decreased nerve conduction velocity
increased pain threshold
reduction of muscle spasms, nerve velocity, or edema
Why is swelling post-TKA a concern?
It inhibits quadriceps strength and delays recovery
What is cryokinetics?
using cold therapy with exercise to increase ROM and Reduce pain
What is cryostretching?
Applying cold before stretching to reduce resistance and improve flexibility
Name 3 big contraindications to cryotherapy
circulatory compromise. cold hypersensitivity, Raynaud’s disease
Whats an important precaution when applying cryotherapy?
avoid areas with poor sensation or over superficial nerves
What makes ice packs more aggressive than gel cold packs?
ice has a higher specific heat and absorbs more energy when melting
What is an ice massage?
direct ice application in circular motions over a small area for 5-10 minutes
What are vapocoolant sprays used for?
trigger point relief and reducing resistance to stretch via counterirritant stimulation
What are contrast baths
alternating hot and cold warm water immersion to promote circulation and reduce edema
