Q

structure

A
  • Small, pear-shaped.
  • Two unequal flagella (longer one with two rows of hairs(mastigonemes) shorter has single frow of mastigonemes) .
  • Periplast: Flexible protein structure instead of cell wall.
  • Trichocysts (ejectosomes): Defense mechanism — explosive protein discharge to escape predators.
  • Rapid uncoiling propels the cell away from the predators in a zig zag ourse

Q

nutrition types

A
  • Photoautotrophic: Chlorophyll a, c, phycobiliproteins (phycocyanin, phycoerythrin).
  • Heterotrophic: No pigments, ingests particles.
  • Mixotrophic: Both photosynthesis and ingestion.

Q

information about the choloroplast in cryptophytes

A
  • Acquired vis secondary endosymbiosis from red algal ancestor
  • Surrounded by 4 membranes (evidence of engulfed eukaryotic cell
  • Contains phycoboloproteins (similar to red alage) for efficient light absorption
