CT - Function & Type Flashcards
(11 cards)
This deck contains questions on
- function of connective tissue
- types of connective tissue
Enjoy :)
State the 4 major functions of connective tissue
Mechanical, Metabolic, Defence & Repair, Growth & Morphogenesis
Elaborate on Mechanical Function of Connective Tissue
- Supporting matrix
- Transmission of forces
- Facilitation of movement
Elaborate on Metabolic Function of Connective Tissue
Route for exchange between blood and other tissues
Fat storage
Elaborate on Defence & Repair Function of Connective Tissue
Insulation, cushioning/padding
Injury, infection and repair
Elaborate on Growth & Morphogenesis Function of Connective Tissue
Growth and morphogenesis:
Control cellular behaviour
Proliferation for growth
Growth factor gradients
Connective tissue is comprised of …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
cells, fibres and macromolecules which act as the ‘ground substance’ for the ECM
- cells, gels and fibres
Name the different types of connective tissues
Embryonic CT = mesenchyme, mucoid
Specialised CT = bone. cartilage, blood
CT proper = Loose CT & Dense CT
Loose CT = areolar tissue, adipose tissue & reticular CT
Dense CT = Dense Regular CT and Dense Irregular CT
So CT proper is further split into loose CT and Dense CT
Dense CT = further split into dense regular CT & dense irregular CT
- Elaborate on DENSE CT, DENSE REGULAR CT & DENSE IRREGULAR CT
Dense connective tissue
For resistance and protection
Contains fewer cells than loose connective tissue, and more collagen fibres
Less flexible but more resistant to stress
Dense regular connective tissue (tendons)
Collagen fibres aligned with linear orientation of fibroblasts along lines of prolonged stress in 1 direction
For example, tendons attaching striated muscle to bone
Dense irregular connective tissue (dermis)
Collagen fibres in bundles with no predominant orientation
3D network forms resistance to stress in all directions, e.g. in dermis of the skin- used to anchor the epithelium
Details about adipose tissue
Adipose (fat) tissue
White adipose
Mature adipocytes have a single large droplet of triglyceride fat, very little cytoplasm (immature cells have smaller lipid droplets)
For energy storage, insulation, padding
Brown adipose
More cytoplasm and many mitochondria, multiple small lipid droplets
For sympathetic innervation/ heat generation- mitochondria are for heat generation
elaborate about elastic tissue
confirm …
Elastic tissue
Bundles of thick, parallel elastic fibres
These are fibres of elastin associated with a glycoprotein
Found in blood vessels (e.g., aorta)
