Cube data source Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is a cube data source?
a data source in which hierarchies and aggregations have been created by the cube’s designer in advance
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
T/F
When using cubes for a multi-dimensional databases, you can make extracts in Tableau.
False
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Which is usually quicker? A cube or relational data source?
cube
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Cubes are fast bc ____
all its aggregations and hierarchies are pre-built
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Which is more flexible? Cube or relational data?
relational.
B/c all of Cube’s aggregations and hierarchies are pre-built, these definitions remain static until the cube is rebuilt.
In other words, you need to know aggregations and hierarchies before building the data whereas you can change these after building the data for a relational data source
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
What kind of datasource are these examples of?
* Oracle Essbase
* Teradata OLAP
* Microsoft Analysis Services (MSAS)
* SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse
* Microsoft PowerPivot

You have a dashboard including 3 views from 3 different data sources: a relational, cube, and cub.
How will each action affect each view? (i.e. An action using the relational data source will ____ the cube view.)
Relational -> cube = won’t affect cube
cube -> relational = will affect relational
cub -> cub = won’t affect cube
.
In other words, Cube data sources do not accept actions from relational or other cube data sources. However, relational data sources do accept actions from cube data sources.

T/F
You cannot use aggregation functions nor Table Calculations with a Cube data source.
False
Cube data sources are pre-aggregated and thus do not support aggregation functions, such as SUM(), AVG(), and CNT().
However, IT MAY BE POSSIBLE to use Table Calculations on cell level results
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Why can’t you use SUM() with a cube data source?
Cube data sources are pre-aggregated and thus do not support aggregation functions, such as SUM(), AVG(), and CNT().
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
How is blending with a cube data source different?
It can only be the primary data source, not the secondary.
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
How are data source filters for a cube data source different?
Data source filters are not available for cube data sources.
All field values must be defined in the cube prior to analysis in Tableau.
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
How is grouping for a cube data source different?
You cannot create groups when working with a cube data source.
Any concept of groupings should be pre-defined in the cube as dimensional attributes or cube sets.
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
How are heirarchies different for a cube data source different?
Herarchies must be defined in the cube prior to analysis.
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
How are parameters different for a cube data source different?
You cannot use parameter values to filter dimensions in an MDX calculation.
multidimensional expressions = MDX

Workbooks that use cube data source cannot be published to ____.
Tableau Cloud
(They can be published to Tableau Server)
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Workbooks that use cube data source can be published to ____.
Tableau Server
(NOT Tableau Cloud)
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Workbooks using cube data source can be published to Tableau Server, but do not support pass-through connections. What does this mean?
- You cannot make a connection from Tableau Server using a cube data source
- You cannot create a workbook using the cube data source in Tableau Server
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
Publishing a cube data source to Tableau Server gives you the ability to store the data source on the server. However, to use the data source, you must ____
download the data source to Tableau Desktop and use it locally
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
What type of sets are supported by cube data sources?
herarchical sets
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
What do hierarchical sets do?
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
filter data to the selected members and all of their descendants
https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/cubes.htm
List of things that cannot be done in Tableau when working with a cube data source b/c they should be pre-defined (aka defined in the cube prior to analysis in Tableau).
