What are customs in a cultural context?
Norms that have been established in society for generations and are usually part of the historical tradition of a society that mark it out as culturally unique and distinctive.
Customs can include various practices, rituals, and traditions that are passed down through generations.
Taking shoes of before entering a home or shaking hands with someone you just met
Values
Beliefs and ideas that society sees as important and that are accepted by the majority of society; they are culturally relative and fluid
Eg value of education and respect for elders
Status
The prestige or social standing attached to a particular role; ascribed (meritocracy, monarchy) or achieved (celebrities Ed Sheeran)
Social control
Deviant and abnormal behaviour is deterred and conformity to the norms rules and laws of a society is reinforced. Done through formal agents or socialisation who enforce and make people obey laws rules and codes of conduct, and Informal agents who focus on upholding certain expectations through use of rewards and sanctions.
Norms
Expected patterns of behaviour that are based on the values of a culture; culturally relative and fluid
Eating with a knife and fork while in some areas of Asia chopsticks are used
Change wearing seatbelts was not the norm until 1980s
Culture
The way of life of a society or group it focuses on their behaviour and beliefs, including knowledge, language, faith, art music,fashion and traditions
Subculture
A group that share distinctive norms and values that are different from those of a mainstream culture and based on religion deviant behaviour dress or music
Cultural diversity
The cultural/ethnic differences and variety found in societies; this can be intercultural and intercultural.
Cultural hybridity
A mixing or merging of two or more cultures that has taken place due to globalisation and developments in digital forms of communication
