What is the theory of plate tectonics?
The Earth’s lithosphere is divided into plates that move due to convection currents in the mantle.
What are the three main types of plate boundaries?
Convergent (collide), Divergent (move apart), Transform (slide past).
Why is the Caribbean region geologically active?
It lies on the Caribbean Plate near subduction and transform boundaries.
What features are formed by plate movements?
Earthquakes, volcanoes, fold mountains.
What is the difference between intrusive and extrusive volcanic features?
Intrusive form underground (e.g. batholiths)
What is physical weathering?
Mechanical breakdown of rocks without changing composition (e.g. freeze-thaw).
What is chemical weathering?
Breakdown of rocks by chemical change (e.g. carbonation).
What is biological weathering?
Breakdown of rocks by living organisms (e.g. plant roots).
What is mass wasting?
Downhill movement of soil or rock due to gravity.
What are the stages of the water cycle?
Evaporation → Condensation → Precipitation → Runoff/Infiltration → Ocean.
What are the four river erosion processes?
Hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, solution.
How do rivers transport material?
Traction, saltation, suspension, solution.
Name two depositional landforms.
Deltas, floodplains.
Name two erosional landforms.
Waterfalls, V-shaped valleys.
What are some limestone landforms?
Caves, sinkholes, stalactites, grikes, clints.
Why is limestone easily weathered?
It is soluble in slightly acidic rainwater.
What’s the difference between constructive and destructive waves?
Constructive build beaches
Name three coastal landforms.
Cliffs, arches, spits.
What is longshore drift?
The movement of sediment along a coast by waves.
What are the types of coral reefs?
Fringing, barrier, atoll.
What conditions are needed for coral reef growth?
Warm, shallow, clear water with low sediment and high sunlight.
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is short-term
Name three major Caribbean weather systems.
Tropical waves, hurricanes, droughts.
What natural vegetation types are found in the Caribbean?
Rainforest (wet), savanna (dry).
