Earths Internal Features Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the Earth’s crust?
A thin layer of solid rock on the Earth’s surface.
What lies beneath the crust?
The mantle and the core.
What is the crust made of?
Slowly moving plates.
What is plate tectonics?
The study of the Earth’s crustal plates.
What natural events are associated with plate margins?
Volcanoes and earthquakes.
What are the two main layers of the crust?
Sima (dense, oceanic) and Sial (lighter, continental).
What happens at divergent plate boundaries?
Plates move apart slowly.
What happens at convergent boundaries?
Plates are pushed together; one is subducted into the mantle.
What happens at transform boundaries?
Plates move past each other.
Where do earthquakes occur?
At all plate boundaries (especially convergent).
Where are volcanoes mainly found?
At convergent and divergent boundaries, not transform.
Which Caribbean countries are geologically stable?
Guyana, Suriname, and The Bahamas.
Where do earthquakes occur?
Along fault lines.
How does faulting influence landforms?
It affects landscape development.
What is the focus (hypocentre) of an earthquake?
The point underground where energy is released.
What is the epicentre?
The point on the surface directly above the focus.
What happens when the crust is compressed on a reverse fault?
Rocks fold and form fold mountains.
Where do fold mountains form?
At convergent plate boundaries.
