How did the allies plan for D-day?

A
  • Eisenhower was made supreme commander of Allied Expeditionary forces
  • Allied troops trained in landing tactics
  • New devices developed to assist landings
  • aerial photographs of Normandy areas
  • french resistance provided info on German defences and troop deployments
  • It was essential that the Germans were convinced the invasion would take place in areas other than Normandy.
  • The allies heavily bombed areas around Calais to make the Germans think that this would be the site for allied landings.

What happened?

A
  • 13000 allied aircrafts pounded radar installations, rail -links and bridges
  • false radio messages
  • invasion of several beaches supported by paratroops
  • casualties only 11000 including 2500 dead
  • floating harbours (Mulberries) bring in supplies of military hardware and oil
  • Allies had landed 156,000 troops with supporting mechanised vehicles

What happened after d-day?

A

27th of June- liberated port of Cherbourg, gave a port to bring further supplies
air superiority destroyed factories and attacked German vehicles and trains
Resistance fighters disrupted German communication and destroyed supplies
10,000 Germans dead and 50,000 troops taken prisoner
Paris liberated on 25th of August 1944
