Douro/DAO- Touriga Nacional
1) Portugal’s flagship red; low yields, small berries = concentrated flavors
2) Intense colour, floral (violet), black fruit, high tannin → backbone of blends
DOURO- Touriga Franca
Higher yielding, adds fragrance, soft tannins, ripe red & black fruit
DOURO/DAO -Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
Early ripening; adds structure, spice, red fruit; prone to oxidation
DOURO- Tinta Barroca
Vigorous; adds softness, body, alcohol; susceptible to heat
DOURO-Tinto Cão
Hardy, drought resistant; adds acidity, structure, and longevity
DOURO-Rabigato (white)
High acidity, citrus and floral notes → freshness in blends
DOURO-Viosinho (white)
Low yielding, contributes body and tropical/citrus fruit
DOURO-Gouveio (Godello in Spain)
Adds richness and aroma, with moderate acidity
Dão- Jaen(Mencia)
Early ripening, lower tannin, soft texture, red berry fruit
Dão- Alfrocheiro
Deep colour, soft tannin, red berry and earthy notes
Dão- Encruzado (white)
Star white grape; floral and citrus aromas, mineral character, good ageing potential (oak & bottle)
Dão-Malvasia Fina
Neutral, adds softness and body to blends
Dão-Bical
High acidity; green apple, citrus; potential for bottle ageing
Dão- Fernão Pires (Maria Gomes)
Aromatic, early ripening, floral and tropical notes, but lacks ageing capacity
Bairrada-Baga
1)Indigenous to Bairrada; thick skins, late-ripening
2)High acidity & tannin, requires careful vineyard & winery handling
3)Youth: rustic, astringent → Age: elegant, complex (earth, forest floor, dried fruit)
4)Responds well to oak and bottle ageing
Bairrada-Maria Gomes (Fernão Pires)
Early ripening, aromatic, tropical/floral, lower acid → suited to early drinking whites
Bairrada-Bical
High acid, lemon, apple, sometimes with mineral edge; used for both still and sparkling wines
