Day-to-day job= meet with government officials. Meet the minister. Met him yesterday- Discussed the key priorities for us
From a farmers perspective, are things looking good currently?
Things are pretty good from a farmer perspective. Production is down in many EU countries so that’s what’s driving this demand
Has progress been made from GHG in sector?
Thankfully progress is being made GHG from sector has fallen and it will fall again this year. We need new tech to come in on the food additives and being taken up at a scale. The sector is up for that challenge.
Where does he spend alot of time currently in his new role?
Spent a lot of time in brussels. Now he’s in brussels 6-7 times a year. Brussels is where a lot of regulation is set. We have to influence the regulations.
Who’s the new agricultural commissioner?
Christopher Hansen - New agricultural communiser; now we are seeing various initiatives and the importance of livestock
Whats happening currently within the beef sector?
Beef sector now- suckler herd= declining; not happy about it. V important part of beef we offer overseas, Reality is more and more beef is coming from the dairy herd.
Have to try and integrate sectors in a different way
What is Ireland the first country globally to do?
Why do we rate and rank animals?
As an industry, we fund some of these- the national genotype schemes: the first country globally to genotype a herd.
We see benefits in the industry need good carcase size, confirmation etc
this is starting to have an impact - CBV we want them to be rated and ranked so the farmer knows the genetic potential of the animal
What do we need to focus on now?
What is the challenge around?
We need a new title and focus on farmers that have particular skills from the dairy herd and rare them through to beef.
Challenge around live exports its not a matter of if its a matter of when- this will be phased out
Need to keep alot more animal on the island to rear for beef
What’s the geopolitical challenge like at the moment in today’s world?
Coming back to the current situation today and the geo political situation is very challenging atm and what that did to supply changes and driving inflation of fertiliser. Trump now elected and prepared to change things- concerning.
The current administration in the US - Whats wrong with it?
Current administration; different administration American first policy was sent up 4-5 years ago set up to clone individuals that were very much aligned with president view- Susan Rolands CEO and now agricultural advisor in the US. Now surrounded by people in his own vision. A lot of administration have to be filled with appointees.
They are bringing junior people into senior roles- concern= no cheques or balances in the change agenda
They look at numbers on goods and trades
How many US Billion dollars to EU trade?
11 billion dollars
In the EU how many billion dollars to US?
27 billion dollars
What did trump place on imported cars?
What was there?
Trump placed tariffs of 25% on imported cars into the US.
There was a trade imbalance
IRE exp ?? billion € to US
What does trump want to being back?
IRE exp 50 billion € to US
- wants to bring jobs back to the US, can’t just lift and bring back.
Ultimately they are looking at new investments in the US instead of expanding in IRE.
