Darwin Flashcards

1
Q

Darwin’s theory 5 stages

A

Genetic variation; characteristics vary between individuals
Environmental change; condition changes causing more competition
Natural Selection ; by chance genetic advantages make better coping mechanisms
Inheritance ; those with advantage survive passing them to offspring who are better adapted
Evolution; it may repeat

Q

Risks of selective breeding

A

Alleles that may be useful in the future are no longer found
Be bad for animals themselves
May be bad for health in long term effects.

Q

Genetic engineering steps

A

Cut section of DNA out using restriction enzymes producing jagged, unpaired ends called sticky ends
Use restriction enzymes on bacterium plasmid which will produce same sticky ends
DNA and plasmid are mixed together and the complementary base pairs join up through an enzyme called ligament which acts as a glue
Insert into bacterium and grown in large VATS
