What is considered 1 alcoholic drink?
- beer - 12 oz - 5%
- wine - 5 oz - 10-12%
- hard liquor - 1-1.25 oz - 35-40%
What does it mean when someone gets blackout drunk?
they have short term memory loss due to excessive alcohol consumption
What is a Depressant?
a drug that decreases the energy of the central nervous system
What does intoxication mean?
the state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol or another substance, and the person’s physical and mental control is significantly reduced
Define Euphoria
the experience of intense feelings of pleasure, excitement, and well-being
Define Dopamine
a neurotransmitter and hormone that affects mood, motivation, movement
Explain a drug that we studied in class:
cocaine - white powder/solid rock crystal (crack), can be snorted, smoked, or injected, short term effects - euphoria, energy, alertness, tremors, nausea, etc., long term effects - anxiety, depression, fatigue, paranoia, etc.
List 3 signs of possible drug use (behavioral, physical, social):
- behavioral - big changes in behavior, lying/cheating, attention-getting behavior, denial of problems
- physical - poor coordination, changes in appearance, slurred speech
- social - friends suspected of drug use, withdrawal from normal activities, poor school performance
What are the 3 treatment options for drug use?
- detoxification - gradual but complete withdrawal from the abused drug under medical supervision
- therapeutic communities - former drug abusers live together and learn to adjust to drug-free lives
- supervised medication - replace the drug that produces some of the same effects, without the “high”
What is a stimulant?
drugs that increase the activity of the nervous system
What is nicotine? How is nicotine consumed?
highly addictive chemical found in most vapes and cigarettes which can be consumed through inhaling smoke, orally, or through the skin
What are carcinogens?
substances that cause cancer
What is the difference between sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke?
- mainstream - smoke exhaled from the lungs of a smoker
- sidestream - the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar
List three healthy ways to quit smoking
self quit, medication, behavioral programs
What are the factors that influence smoking?
peer pressure, family influences, weight control, media influences
