Data Flashcards

(12 cards)

1
Q

Primary data

A

Information that has been gathered first hand by the researchers specifically for the purpose of their research directly from participants. E.g questionnaires

2
Q

Secondary data

A

previously been collected by a third party and does not come directly from the source and is not specific to the purpose of the study. and then used by the researcher

Q

Quantitative data strengths

A

Objectively measured=reduces the likelihood of researcher bias=increases scientific credibility
Easy and quick to analyse= e.g data can be summarised and displayed on a graphs, charts or tables=allows conclusions to be drawn much quicker

7
Q

Qualitative data strengths

A

Allows researcher to gain insights into individual’s experiences = pariticpants are not restricted in the way they answer questions=high validity

Can be used to expand on and deepen knowledge of complex behaviours

8
Q

Qualitative data weakness

A

-difficult + time consuming to analyse due to being in great detail
-qualitative data collected by researchers can be open to interpretation + potentially bias

9
Q

Strength of primary data

A

May be more reliable and valid than secondary data as the researcher has full control over how the data is collected

The data collected is able to answer the research aim directly

10
Q

Weakness of primary

A

Expensive and time consuming compared to the use of secondary data which can be garrgered very quickly

Primary data is derived from a single study compared to secondary which can amass huge samples

11
Q

Strengths of secondary data

A

-already exists and is often already analysed =reduced time and costs spend when conducting the research

-can provide new insights into existing theories and research

12
Q

Weakness of secondary data

A

Data may not directly address the aims or the topic research =affects validity

Researcher has not run the original studies themselves =fo not know the degree of control=affects the reliability
